Reef Point for sale in Bar Harbor, Maine

$3,150,000

Reef Point is named for the Shore Path cottage that was originally built on the property in 1883. From Lost Bar Harbor :Reef Point, by architects Rotch Tilden, was built in 1883 for Mrs. Cadwalader Jones. Born Mary Cadwalader Rawle in Philadelphia, she married and divorced Frederick R. Jones, brother of Edith Wharton, with whom she remained a close freind and literary agent. Mrs. Jone's daughter, Beatrix Farrand, was a landscape gardener of great distinction. The Farrands always spent their summers at Reef Point. After Max Farrand's death in 1945, Mrs. Farrand dedicated herself to the development and management of Reef point, which she had established in 1939 as a botanical garden and reference library for public use. The project was abandoned in 1955 and Mrs. Farrand disposed of the acreage and her old home. Reef Point was subsequently torn down that same year.Today the Reef Point property consists of the cottage (the three bedroom house right on the Shorepath) and the guest quarters next to it. There is also the upper house which is the only remaining part of the original estate (which also has three bedrooms) . On almost two acres of property, this is an exceptional Bar Harbor offering with such a large lot in such a pristine and historic location. The oceanside tennis court is especially intriguing as are the gardens, obviously still maintaining some of the style of the original.
